A live-edge waterfall desk turns one dramatic slab into both the work surface and a sculptural end panel. The continuous grain is the feature, so careful layout matters more than decorative hardware.

Plan the project

Start with a dry slab and mark the best edge for the front. A finished height near 29 to 30 inches suits most desk chairs. Reserve knee clearance before deciding where shelves or a computer tower will sit.

Build for strength and serviceability

Cut the waterfall joint from adjacent portions of the slab so the grain appears to fold over the corner. Reinforce the miter with splines, loose tenons, or concealed fasteners. Flatten both faces and allow seasonal movement wherever the top meets fixed storage.

Finish and use it well

Ease sharp edges without erasing the natural contour. Fill only unstable voids, then use a hard-wax oil or furniture-grade topcoat. Add adjustable feet and cable management before moving the heavy assembly into place.

Adapt dimensions, fasteners, and structural details to your materials, site, and local requirements. Use appropriate personal protective equipment and consult a qualified professional where structural, electrical, or code questions apply.

Design decisions

Choose the slab only after confirming the finished desk length, depth, and the location of the waterfall end. A typical writing surface needs enough depth for a monitor and keyboard without forcing the user against the front edge. Mark checks, bark pockets, twist, and soft areas before deciding which face will be visible. The most attractive edge is not automatically the safest front edge.

Mock up the height with boxes and a temporary top. Include the thickness of leveling feet and any drawer unit. Verify chair arms, knee clearance, outlets, baseboard projections, and the route for monitor and charging cables.

Material preparation

Use a slab that has reached a moisture content suitable for the room where the desk will live. A recently milled slab can continue shrinking and distort the waterfall joint. Flatten both faces methodically, then allow the material to rest before the final pass. Stabilize loose bark and remove material that cannot be made sound.

Joint and support strategy

Lay out the miter so adjacent grain appears to turn the corner. Test the cut on straight scrap before cutting the slab. Splines, loose tenons, or another concealed reinforcement help align the long miter during glue-up. The opposite end needs a base or leg that resists racking while still allowing normal seasonal movement across the top.

Final checks

  • Confirm the desk cannot tip when weight is placed near either end.
  • Ease the working edge and all corners that contact legs or cables.
  • Use elongated holes or suitable hardware where a fixed base crosses the grain.
  • Test the finish on an offcut, including any resin-filled areas.
