Before you build
Use the reference image and planning notes as a starting point. Confirm dimensions, loads, materials, local codes, and site conditions before purchasing or cutting.

A bottle and weathered branch can create a striking accent lamp, but the electrical and stability details should remain conventional and serviceable.
Plan the project
Select dry, insect-free wood and a bottle without chips or cracks. Design a broad base that cannot tip easily. Plan a protected cord route that avoids sharp glass and tight bends.
Build for strength and serviceability
Clean and dry the wood thoroughly, then secure it mechanically to the base. Use a listed lamp kit, strain relief, and socket components appropriate to your region. Do not improvise mains-voltage connections.
Finish and use it well
Preserve texture while removing loose fibers and dirt. Choose a cool-running LED bulb within the fixture rating. If you are uncertain about wiring, have the final assembly checked by a qualified electrician.
Adapt dimensions, fasteners, and structural details to your materials, site, and local requirements. Use appropriate personal protective equipment and consult a qualified professional where structural, electrical, or code questions apply.
Design around the bottle
Select the bottle and light source before shaping the wood support. The glass must sit securely without concentrating stress at one point. Use a cradle or restrained opening that permits removal for cleaning. Keep the center of gravity over a broad stable base and test stability with the cord pulled gently from different directions.
Electrical safety
Use a listed lampholder, cord, strain relief, switch, and plug that are compatible with one another. Low-heat LED lamps reduce heat but do not remove the need for proper clearances and insulation. Do not pass a cord across sharp glass or unfinished holes. If local rules require electrical work to be performed or inspected by a qualified person, follow them.
Prepare natural wood
Dry and clean driftwood thoroughly. Remove loose fibers, hidden grit, and unstable branches while preserving the intended form. Inspect for insects and decay. Flatten the base discreetly or attach it to a stable plinth; a visually balanced branch can still tip once a glass bottle and hardware are added.
Commissioning checks
- Confirm the glass cannot touch the lamp or hot components.
- Install strain relief where the cord enters the assembly.
- Use a bulb within the lampholder and shade rating.
- Run the lamp under observation and check for heat or odor.
- Place it where children and pets cannot pull the cord.
