Quick answer: Organize a garage pegboard in zones: measuring tools near the bench center, drivers and pliers in the dominant-hand reach area, drilling accessories near chargers, safety gear at the entry edge, and small hardware in retained bins. Leave open space so the board can evolve.
Install the board with working space behind it
Peg hooks need clearance behind the panel. Mount pegboard on a straight furring frame anchored to suitable wall framing, keeping the panel flat and edges supported. Plan around receptacles rather than covering them, and use listed extenders or professional electrical work where necessary.

Lay tools on the bench first and group them by task. Mount only the first group, use the shop for a week, then adjust. Copying a perfect-looking display can put the tools you actually use in the wrong place.
Match holders to tool shape and weight
Single hooks suit lightweight tools with closed handles. Heavy drills need shelves or purpose-built cradles. Pliers work on paired hooks or a rail, while long levels and squares need multiple contact points. Use hook retainers so the holder stays in the board when the tool is lifted.
Keep sharp and powered tools controlled
Point cutting edges away from hands and walking paths. Do not hang a tool by its trigger, guard, cord, or battery release. Store loose blades in a closed holder. Keep chargers on a noncombustible, ventilated surface according to their instructions rather than burying them among sawdust and rags.
Reserve capacity and maintain it
- Leave roughly one-fifth of the panel open.
- Return tools to the same outlined or grouped location.
- Vacuum dust from bins and hooks periodically.
- Replace bent hooks and tighten the mounting frame.
- Move specialty tools to drawers if they crowd everyday items.

Common questions
Is metal or hardboard pegboard better?
Metal panels are durable and often use proprietary accessories; hardboard is economical and easy to cut. Choose a compatible hook system and follow its spacing and load guidance.
How high should garage pegboard be?
Center the most-used zone between comfortable waist and eye level above the bench. Adjust for the primary user and keep dangerous tools away from children.
